- JOSEPH SOLD TO SLAVERY BY HIS BROTHERS
- JOSEPH VENDU EN ESCLAVAGE PAR SES FRÈRES
INTRODUCTION
- Today we are going to see the destructive power of jealousy.
- Jealousy was at the base of the first murder case in the Bible.
- Jealousy remains one of the most common pitfalls of mankind.
- Jealousy can creep in without any detection in the life of even the most pious person if not careful.
- Jealousy and envy are twin sisters.
- When one covets what belongs to another, he seeks to obtain it by all means necessary.
- If the point of attraction or blessing in one’s life cannot be snatched,, the next course of action of jealousy is to destroy the recipient.
- If the food cannot be in the plate of the jealous person, then spoiling it, or eradicating the person eating it becomes the mandate.
- We practice this type of animosity skillfully when we play games like dominoes and cards, etc.
- You put all sorts of stumbling blocks to freeze your opponent.
- In dominoes, you kill the double to prevent your opponent from winning.
- When jealousy is translated in our endeavors in life, it becomes a destructive force.
- Envy and jealousy are the old sins practiced by the devil who wanted to dethrone God so that he could receive the praises and worships that are due only to God.
JEALOUSY GENERATED BY PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT
- Preferential treatment can draw an explosive type of jealousy.
- Saul sought to kill David because the people loved David more than him.
- Many people are unfair victims of jealousy because of the preferential treatments they received without asking for it.
- This type of jealousy is very common among siblings.
- You can also find it at work, at school, in church, in sport, and in any type of gathering.
- Our sinful nature demands of us to at the center of attention in everything.
- We live in an era of “winner takes all” attitude, thus, anything sub to being number one is considered failure.
- People find pleasure in destroying the person in the spotlight so that their self-projected failure may not be apparent.
- Another way that this type of jealousy is manifested is by neutralizing the target so that he or she cannot live the fullness of his/her authority or blessing.
- God is no respecter of persons. He loves all his children.
- Most of what could be considered blessings of God, are task oriented talents, privileges bestowed upon an individual for the glory of God.
- God needed a deliverer for the Children of Jacob and Joseph was the designee for the task.
- The open preferential treatment that Jacob gave to Joseph was wrong.
- Jacob’s affection for Joseph fuelled the deadly jealousy among his sons.
- What do we do when the preferential treatment seems to be of God?
- God was the one communicating those dreams to Joseph, not Jacob.
- The big brothers of Joseph seemed to have more issues with his dreams than anything else.
JOSEPH IN QUEST FOR HIS BROTHERS
OBSERVATIONS
- Joseph was already of age to be among his brothers in the fields.
- Jacob did not move all his belongings with him when he fled Sichem.
- The sons of Jacob were semi nomadic in order to take care of their livestock.
- There was no apparent danger for Joseph to travel alone.
6- Jacob failed to see the height of the animosity that the rest of the family generated toward Joseph.
7- Jacob failed to see how wicked his other sons had become.
8- Jacob repeated the same mistake of his father Isaac who loved his big brother Esau so passionately while ignoring him.
- People generally knew each other back in the days as opposed to our generation of strangers.
- Joseph was determined to find his brothers to bring them foods and supplies.
- He also wanted to know how they were doing so that he could inform his father of their states at his return.
- When one is consumed with jealous toward a person, he or she tend to misinterpret all their actions.
- When one is consumed with jealous toward a person, he or she tends to misinterpret all his actions.
- They might have thought that the visit of Joseph was for spying on them.
- They were a united bunch who could have been busy selling secretly the sheep of the family.
- The presence of Joseph infuriated them.
- Joseph’s brother did not call him by name but called him by his destiny.
- Here comes the dreamer.
- When people get accustomed to talk negative about a person with about any rebuke from the group, the person in question becomes a common enemy to all.
- The one who did not share the sentiment of the group who kept quiet will soon find himself in a compromising situation.
- The Bible tells us that Ruben did not share the same views of the rest of the brothers, but silence means consents.
- Ruben made a plea on behalf of Joseph while avoiding to lose the approval of his brothers.
- Let’s not kill him; let’s throw him in the pit instead.
- Ruben’s real intention was to save Joseph afterward.
- His plan was half successful because the life of Joseph was spared thanks to him.
- Unfortunately, the second part of Ruben’s secret rescue plan did not happen.
- The blood thirty brothers found a more profitable mean to get weed of Joseph.
The failed attempt of Ruben
- The brothers of Joseph were upset to see Joseph wearing his coat of distinction tailored made for him.
- The coat was an icon of their hate.
- They could not stand to see Joseph wearing that coat.
- Jealousy is the most irrational emotion.
- It can magnify something of little importance.
- Since Rachel was no longer in the picture, Joseph had become the new target of Jealousy from the rest of the family.
- The Children of Ishmael the first son of Abraham, had already become a sizeable nation when Isaac’s descendants were just barely managing to survive.
- They were great traders.
- They travelled through the desert to Egypt.
- They had all sorts of goods in their caravans.
- Among others, they were also slaves traders.
- They made a bargain in their purchase of Joseph.
- They only paid twenty pieces of silver for a prince.
- Joseph was handsome and well mannered.
- Joseph had a great knowledge in management and agriculture.
- Joseph knew very well the field of raising animals.
- Joseph was also supernaturally blessed by God.
- Once again the name of Ruben resurfaces.
- He went to rescue Joseph and Joseph was not in the cistern.
- He inquired of the whereabouts of Joseph and was informed that Joseph was just being sold.
- Ruben was the only one among Joseph’s brothers who showed any remorse and compassion.
- Ruben was old and influential enough to slow the animosity that was being generated toward Joseph and failed to do it until it was too late.
- Now Ruben was going to have to participate in the lie of the family.
- Ruben was going to keep hi slips shot just like the rest of the brothers.
- Many are in jail today by default of association.
- Many are dying with guilt because of secrets they know, although they might not have played any part in the action.
THE SECRECY AND HYPOCRISY OF THE SONS OF JACOB
- The brothers of Joseph created the story to tell their father.
- They watched their dad plunged in a state of despair because of the news.
- They participated in the search for Joseph.
- They were among the ones offering emotional supports to Jacob for his lost.
CONCLUSION
- While God did nothing to interfere with the malevolence of the brothers of Jacob, He was right there in the heart of the story.
- While God can use human interaction to fulfill his will, no one can deter the perfect will of God toward His children.
- Tout chemin mène à Rome. All roads lead to Rome.
- Joseph was about to know a few more rises and falls before hitting his destiny.
- The chosens of God will grow in whatever field they are planted.
- If men shut a window, God will open a door for his children.
- If men shut a door, God will open an avenue for his children.
- AMEN!
