Ge 32:28 Il dit encore: ton nom ne sera plus Jacob, mais tu seras appelé Israël; car tu as lutté avec Dieu et avec des hommes, et tu as été vainqueur.

 28 And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

QUI? POURQUOI ? COMMENT ?

1. Quel prophète avait une vision de Dieu assis dans le temple au milieu des séraphins ?
2. Quelles paroles de louange proféraient les séraphins qui volaient autour de Dieu dans le temple dans la vision du prophète ?
3. Comment les séraphins se servaient de leurs ailes ?

LECTURE

Genèse 32:24-31

24 ¶ Jacob demeura seul. Alors un homme lutta avec lui jusqu’au lever de l’aurore.

 25 Voyant qu’il ne pouvait le vaincre, cet homme le frappa à l’emboîture de la hanche; et l’emboîture de la hanche de Jacob se démit pendant qu’il luttait avec lui.

 26 Il dit: Laisse-moi aller, car l’aurore se lève. Et Jacob répondit: Je ne te laisserai point aller, que tu ne m’aies béni.

 27 Il lui dit: Quel est ton nom? Et il répondit: Jacob.

 28 Il dit encore: ton nom ne sera plus Jacob, mais tu seras appelé Israël; car tu as lutté avec Dieu et avec des hommes, et tu as été vainqueur.

 29 Jacob l’interrogea, en disant: Fais-moi je te prie, connaître ton nom. Il répondit: Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom? Et il le bénit là.

 30 Jacob appela ce lieu du nom de Peniel: car, dit-il, j’ai vu Dieu face à face, et mon âme a été sauvée.

 31 Le soleil se levait, lorsqu’il passa Peniel. Jacob boitait de la hanche.

 32 C’est pourquoi jusqu’à ce jour, les enfants d’Israël ne mangent point le tendon qui est à l’emboîture de la hanche; car Dieu frappa Jacob à l’emboîture de la hanche, au tendon.

INTRODUCTION

The Bible contains many difficult passages; the wrestling of Jacob with God has got to be one of the hardest biblical passages to do an exegesis on.

• Is it a Christophany?
• Is it a Theophany?
• Is it Michael the Arch Angel, the guardian of Israel?
• How was that being produced to the scene?
• Can a man fight with God and win in a real match (Theos a mano)?
• Was it really a fight or a good grab?
• Was it a psychosomatic experience or an actual event?
• What was Jacob thinking?
• What was the exchange of words between Jacob and God?
• How did the fight get started; who provoked it?
• Why couldn’t the stronger escape from the weaker?
• Were they mad at each other?
• Why did God hit him so hard in such a critical part of his body?
• What was in the mind of God; what was God thinking?
• What principles are we to draw from that narrative?

• I asked my wife her opinion about the passage; she says she could not make sense of it. She said maybe it is something a man can understand better.
• The contrary is rather true; it is women who fight holding each other’s hair or wig, or clothe.
• Men back away, throw a blow or a kick and back away again looking for an opportunity to attack.
• No matter how you look at it, there is no way anyone can do an exhaustive study to this passage, because we are missing so many clues in the puzzle.
• Just like a good detective would do, we are going to look for clues in order to recreate the scene and with the help of the Holy Spirit, draw some conclusion for the edification of our soul.

A CLOSE LOOK AT THIS GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

Genèse 28:11-17

11 Il arriva dans un lieu où il passa la nuit; car le soleil était couché. Il y prit une pierre, dont il fit son chevet, et il se coucha dans ce lieu-là.

 12 Il eut un songe. Et voici, une échelle était appuyée sur la terre, et son sommet touchait au ciel. Et voici, les anges de Dieu montaient et descendaient par cette échelle.

 13 Et voici, l’Éternel se tenait au-dessus d’elle; et il dit: Je suis l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Abraham, ton père, et le Dieu d’Isaac. La terre sur laquelle tu es couché, je la donnerai à toi et à ta postérité.

 14 Ta postérité sera comme la poussière de la terre; tu t’étendras à l’occident et à l’orient, au septentrion et au midi; et toutes les familles de la terre seront bénies en toi et en ta postérité.

 15 Voici, je suis avec toi, je te garderai partout où tu iras, et je te ramènerai dans ce pays; car je ne t’abandonnerai point, que je n’aie exécuté ce que je te dis.

 16 ¶ Jacob s’éveilla de son sommeil et il dit: Certainement, l’Éternel est en ce lieu, et moi, je ne le savais pas!

 17 Il eut peur, et dit: Que ce lieu est redoutable! C’est ici la maison de Dieu, c’est ici la porte des cieux!

• Night travelers always have some tales.
• People are warned about certain areas.
• There are places that can give you a good chill.
• I see people jogging in the middle of a cemetery before daybreak or after sun set. (That would not be me.)
• Jacob has had an encounter in that corridor on his way to padam Haran that freaked him out.

Ge 28:17 Il eut peur, et dit: Que ce lieu est redoutable (effroyable, épouvantable, terrible) ! C’est ici la maison de Dieu, c’est ici la porte des cieux!

 17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful (frightful shocking, fearsome) is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

• We know that this area is scary
• Follow the map to the pathway of Jacob

• In our investigation of the location, we are given yet another clue.
• It wasn’t just a place where you can dream about angels, but you can expect to see them also with your naked eyes.
• On the way back home, Jacob hit that twilight zone again.
• The heavenly visitors, the watchers, the angels plagued this area.

Genèse 32:1-2

1 ¶ Jacob poursuivit son chemin; et des anges de Dieu le rencontrèrent.

 2 En les voyant, Jacob dit: C’est le camp de Dieu! Et il donna à ce lieu le nom de Mahanaïm.

• This must be even a more terrifying place than area 51 in Nevada.
• In that geographical, corridor there must have been many ghost stories told for over the years.
• God has a strong base in that area
• In the way going, he saw angels and God in a dream
• In the way back, he saw angels and God in real life.
• There is a mystery in that zone.
• Whether it is God or Satan, I would not be comfortable in a place like that.
• It freaks me out to be in a place like this.
• Jacob made one more mistake; he crossed all his cattle and family on the other side of the Jordan, he himself remained alone on the other side of Jordan.
• Tricking Esau might have been in his mind
• The animals are easy to spot
• The wives and children are easy to spot
• Jacob tried to stay under cover, hidden, in camouflage.

• The solitude allowed him to pour his heart out to God.
• There was no holdback, no pretense; it was a time to make a real connection with God.
• The prayer of Jacob is recorded in Genesis 32

THE PRAYER OF JACOB

Genèse 32:9-13

9 ¶ Jacob dit: Dieu de mon père Abraham, Dieu de mon père Isaac, Éternel, qui m’as dit: Retourne dans ton pays et dans ton lieu de naissance, et je te ferai du bien!

 10 Je suis trop petit pour toutes les grâces et pour toute la fidélité dont tu as usé envers ton serviteur; car j’ai passé ce Jourdain avec mon bâton, et maintenant je forme deux camps.

 11 Délivre-moi, je te prie, de la main de mon frère, de la main d’Ésaü! car je crains qu’il ne vienne, et qu’il ne me frappe, avec la mère et les enfants.

 12 Et toi, tu as dit: Je te ferai du bien, et je rendrai ta postérité comme le sable de la mer, si abondant qu’on ne saurait le compter.

 13 ¶ C’est dans ce lieu-là que Jacob passa la nuit. . .

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PRAYER OF JACOB

• Jacob was of course in a state of confusion
• Why should the will of God’s be so hard to follow?
• Why must there be a challenge at every step of the way?
• Why must danger be so imminent everywhere, when you try to be obedient to God?
• Challenges can make you question yourself.
• Challenges can make you question God.
• Challenges can make you doubt your mission, and your relationship with God.
• Challenges can bring confusion, discouragement, self doubt, abandonment, and failure.
• Jacob reminds God, that you are the cause of all that.
  • You were the one who told me to come back
  • You were the one who told me you would be with me and you were.
  • You were the one who told me I would be rich and I am.
  • You were the one who told me I would have a safe journey, why then is Esau approaching with 400 hundred men?
• Many servants of God, myself included, have travelled in that same valley where Jacob is now.
• A strong revelation of God and a confusing reality to follow.
• A strong promise and a disappointing reality.
• Why would somebody march toward you with 400 hundred men to welcome you?
• Some blessings really look like a curse at first.
• All Jacob could preclude is: 400 men for the massacre of Jacob and his family.

THE WRESTLING MATCH BETWEEN GOD AND JACOB

Genèse 32:24-

24 ¶ Jacob demeura seul. Alors un homme lutta avec lui jusqu’au lever de l’aurore.

• There are several questions that arise with the presence of that mysterious night visitor.
• Could you be fighting God and not know it?
• Could you have been fighting God and mistake Him for Satan?
• Could you have been fighting God and mistake him for a man?
• Could you be fighting God in a bizarre form?
• There must be a legend that says that if you ever meet a phantom don’t let them go until they bless you, otherwise you will die.
• Jacob should be the one running away, yet Jacob is the one holding on to the stranger
• Where did Jacob find that bravery all a sudden?
• Isn’t it the same Jacob who is so scared of the approach of Esau.
• May God give you all the bravery necessary on the last battle before your blessing.
• Who are you really fighting?
• We ministers of God fight God all the time, but we mistake him for another.

AFTER THE WRESTLING MATCH

• Jacob’s identity had changed.
• Jacob had a bad name before; the name permeated his entire soul, his behavior, his identity, and his interactions with people.
• Jacob was issued a new name; God gave him his proper name.
• His new name became Israel. The prince of God, a mighty warrior.
• The new name contains invincibility.
• The new name contains: victory, bravery, honor, authority, and impressiveness.
• The name Jacob was given because of a lost fight. Since Jacob could not beat Esau out of the belly of Rebecca to be the first born, he grabbed and held on the heel of Esau.
• Esau was given the name of honor, and Jacob was given a name of dishonor: a name that reflects: trickery, deception, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, scam, in short: a con artist.
• Jacob lived his entire life unable to escape from the implication of that name.
• The name became a curse to Jacob.
• Jacob insisted that the strange man of the night blessed him by holding on to him.
• That’s all Jacob knew how to do up to that point. “I will not let you go until you bless me.”
  • “Beat me it you want,
  • damage me if you want,
  •  kill me if you want,
  • one thing is certain, is that you are not going anywhere until you bless me.”
• Ok, Ok, what is your name? Jacob it is
• Jacob could have said what does my name have to do with it?
• Your name will no longer be Jacob; from this day forward your name will be changed to Israel.
• You have been given a new identity, a new social security number, a new name.
• The old name had passed away behold all things have become new for you.
• You will no longer have to trick your way in life,
• Henceforth, you will walk with the confidence of a mighty warrior.
• For, you have fought both man and God and have won.
• The fight gave Jacob the final evidence he needed before meeting Esau.
  • Seeing God face to face and not died
  • Having fought God and won
  • Being given a heroic name by the Creator of the universe
  • Being reassured of the blessings of Abraham by God in person

THE BENEFICES THAT JACOB DREW FROM THE FIGHT WITH GOD

• The fight with God gave Jacob a new point of self reference.
• The fight with God stirred the confidence of Jacob to all new elevation
• The fight with God chased all clouds of doubts that might have been looming over Jacob.
• God cannot let you enter your blessing with your old you.
• Some blessing requires a complete overall and a redesign in your psyche, your personality, otherwise you will mess up.
• The fearful and easily intimidated Jacob could not build a nation, but Israel the price of God, the mighty warrior can build the nation God intended.
• Are you operating with the name that men gave you, or are you operated with the new identity that God conferred to you?
• Do you still rely on your old little tricks to navigate in life or are you resting under the shadow of the most high God?
