RECAP OF LAST BIBLE STUDY

• As we said previously, every wise person must be able to identify the moods of the people around him or her.
• You get to know when to slip slide, otherwise you will find yourself in the wrong place and at the wrong time.
• A person of destiny doesn’t have the luxury to take long pleasant poses in life.
• As soon as one reaches a comfort zone, trouble is around the corner.
• The second journey in one’s life is as important as the first journey.
• The first journey is about self discovery
• The first journey is about getting in the game
• The first journey is about learning to survive
• The first journey is about creating for oneself a little space in the universe
• The first journey is about getting established, making a name for oneself
• The first journey is about self preservation

• Jacob was wise to notice the change of moods around him
• Jealousy and hatred were in the heart of his in-laws
• What you labored for has been interpreted as theft.
• Too many people are looking in your plate.
• Too many are eager to remind you of your humble beginning.
• You can sense that danger is imminent.
• People need to assimilate the moods around them
• People need to always be ready to slip-slide when the situation calls for it.

INTRODUCTION

Today, by the grace of God we will navigate with Jacob in his second journey.

We will see how important it is to always get God on your side in the many journeys you may have to take in life.

Genèse 31:1-3

1 ¶ Jacob entendit les propos des fils de Laban, qui disaient: Jacob a pris tout ce qui était à notre père, et c’est avec le bien de notre père qu’il s’est acquis toute cette richesse.

 2 Jacob remarqua aussi le visage de Laban; et voici, il n’était plus envers lui comme auparavant.

 3 Alors l’Éternel dit à Jacob: Retourne au pays de tes pères et dans ton lieu de naissance, et je serai avec toi.

• V 3 God told Jacob that it was the time to head back home
• Another complicated journey for Jacob
• This time it will not just be Jacob and a staff in his hand crossing the Jordan
• This time it will be Jacob and two wives and two concubines
• This time it will be Jacob and eleven sons and a daughter
• This time it will be Jacob and a bunch of servants and maids
• This time it will be Jacob and a great number of life stocks (sheep, goats, cows, camels, and all sorts of domesticated animals.)
• This time it will be Jacob and a lot of gold and silver.
• This time it will be Mr. Jacob, Master Jacob, businessman Jacob, honorable Jacob, easy to spot Jacob, envied Jacob, and prime target for jealousy Jacob.

• The first journey had saved the life of Jacob, and so will the second journey.
• If Jacob wasted any time to make the first journey, his brother Esau would have killed him
• If Jacob wasted time to make to second journey, his brothers-in-law, and his father-in-law would have killed him.

Ge 31:4 Jacob fit appeler Rachel et Léa, qui étaient aux champs vers son troupeau.

 5 Il leur dit: Je vois, au visage de votre père, qu’il n’est plus envers moi comme auparavant; mais le Dieu de mon père a été avec moi.

 6 Vous savez vous-mêmes que j’ai servi votre père de tout mon pouvoir.

 7 Et votre père s’est joué de moi, et a changé dix fois mon salaire; mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de me faire du mal.

 8 Quand il disait: Les tachetées seront ton salaire, toutes les brebis faisaient des petits tachetés. Et quand il disait: Les rayées seront ton salaire, toutes les brebis faisaient des petits rayés.

 9 Dieu a pris à votre père son troupeau, et me l’a donné.

 10 Au temps où les brebis entraient en chaleur, je levai les yeux, et je vis en songe que les boucs qui couvraient les brebis étaient rayés, tachetés et marquetés.

 11 Et l’ange de Dieu me dit en songe: Jacob! Je répondis: Me voici!

 12 Il dit: Lève les yeux, et regarde: tous les boucs qui couvrent les brebis sont rayés, tachetés et marquetés; car j’ai vu tout ce que te fait Laban.

 13 Je suis le Dieu de Béthel, où tu as oint un monument, où tu m’as fait un voeu. Maintenant, lève-toi, sors de ce pays, et retourne au pays de ta naissance.

 14 Rachel et Léa répondirent, et lui dirent: Avons-nous encore une part et un héritage dans la maison de notre père?

 15 Ne sommes-nous pas regardées par lui comme des étrangères, puisqu’il nous a vendues, et qu’il a mangé notre argent?

 16 Toute la richesse que Dieu a ôtée à notre père appartient à nous et à nos enfants. Fais maintenant tout ce que Dieu t’a dit.

 17 ¶ Jacob se leva, et il fit monter ses enfants et ses femmes sur les chameaux.

 18 Il emmena tout son troupeau et tous les biens qu’il possédait, le troupeau qui lui appartenait, qu’il avait acquis à Paddan-Aram; et il s’en alla vers Isaac, son père, au pays de Canaan.

• This week we will be focusing on the second journey of Jacob
• The danger he had to face
• How he overcome his father in-law who came after him to harm him
• How he encountered his brother Esau whom he feared so much
• We will help you to see the importance of each journey in life.
• We see how our dependence upon God must increase for each new adventure in life.

THE NECESSITY FOR SECOND JOURNEYS IN LIFE

• A second journey or a go back home journey can be even more difficult than the initial journey to leave the home.
• Moses had to journey back to Egypt
• Esdrah the scribe had to journey back to Jerusalem
• Nehemiah had to journey back to Jerusalem the motherland
• The children of Israel had to journey back to Canaan after 432 years in Egypt
• Joseph, unable to make the journey back to Canaan, commanded that his bones be carried back home on the day of the Exodus.
• Certain species of salmon and turtles, and butterflies and birds remain a phenomenon to the science community
• The Mexican butterflies would migrate as far as two thousand miles away from Mexico, for some reason, this feeble insect would venture to take this perilous journey back home at a certain time of the year to lay their eggs,
• Some species of sea turtles would migrate in excess of 3000 miles away, only to make the journey back to their birthplace to lay their eggs and continue the survival of the specie.
• Salmon have died in staggering number each year in their effort to make the journey back to their birthplace. Some have to swim upstream, shoot themselves in the air to connect with the river. After they lay their eggs, many die of exhaustion.

THE PURPOSE OF EACH JOURNEY DIFFERS FROM THE OTHERS

• The second journeys are not about food and shelter and clothes, and riches.
• The second journeys have more spiritual significances to them
• The second journeys involve, purpose
• The second journeys involve catching-up with your destiny
• The second journeys involve accomplishing your mission on earth
• The second journeys involve creating a legacy for those who come after you
• The second journey is about downsizing to focus in order to focus on the essentials
• The second journey can be compared with children playing with (toupie) when the toupee finds the spot, it stops roaming around. (topi-a ap dòmi)
• The first journey was about getting, and accumulating. The second journey is about giving and dispensing what you have
  • Self-sacrifice
  • Investing in others
  • Fixing some wrong in this planet
  • Lining-up with the will of God
  • Serving others
  • Serving your nation
  • Investing for eternity
  • Making peace
  • Displaying wisdom
• Many make the mistake to begin their second journey with a first journey mentality.
  • Getting rich
  • Accumulating wealth and fame
  • Getting attention
  • Competing to be number one
  • Catching-up with the Jones
  • Living a licentious lifestyle, sleeping around
  • Marrying a trophy wife or husband
  • Dominating the less fortunate
  • Me, myself, and I attitude.

THE SURPRISES OF THE SECOND JOURNEY OF JACOB

• The journey back home Would turnout to be more complicated for Jacob than expected.
• We know that his father-in-law would not be pleased on the nature of his departure, but nothing prepared Jacob for his reaction.
  • Nothing prepared Jacob to expect that this guy would mount an army and march after him for seven days.
  • Nothing prepared Jacob for the zeal and the accusations that would be launched at him.
  • Nothing prepared Jacob for thirst for blood and the vengeance he saw in Laban’s eyes.

Ge 31:22-29

22 Le troisième jour, on annonça à Laban que Jacob s’était enfui.

 23 Il prit avec lui ses frères, le poursuivit sept journées de marche, et l’atteignit à la montagne de Galaad.

 24 Mais Dieu apparut la nuit en songe à Laban, l’Araméen, et lui dit: Garde-toi de parler à Jacob ni en bien ni en mal!

 25 ¶ Laban atteignit donc Jacob. Jacob avait dressé sa tente sur la montagne; Laban dressa aussi la sienne, avec ses frères, sur la montagne de Galaad.

 26 Alors Laban dit à Jacob: Qu’as-tu fait? Pourquoi m’as-tu trompé, et emmènes-tu mes filles comme des captives par l’épée?

 27 Pourquoi as-tu pris la fuite en cachette, m’as-tu trompé, et ne m’as-tu point averti? Je t’aurais laissé partir au milieu des réjouissances et des chants, au son du tambourin et de la harpe. (chants de funérailles)

 28 Tu ne m’as pas permis d’embrasser mes fils et mes filles! C’est en insensé que tu as agi.

 29 Ma main est assez forte pour vous faire du mal; mais le Dieu de votre père m’a dit hier: Garde-toi de parler à Jacob ni en bien ni en mal!

• God had to intervene to prevent Laban from putting Jacob into pieces.
• Thank God for Jacob, the first obstacle is over
• A peace treaty is signed between him and his father in law.
• Jacob is not yet at rest. The next and bigger obstacle is Esau.

JACOB PREPARES TO MEET ESAU

• The wrong approach can spark some old fires
• A display of strength and success could send the wrong message Esau
• Sneak in secretly so that Esau is not informed would not be wise
• We Haitians have so much to learn from this narrative.
• Pretending that the time away had cured the wounds of his brother is foolish
• Downplaying the enormity of the offense would be unwise
• Thinking that Esau has forgotten about it is childish
• Pretending that nothing had happened is impertinent

• Jacob decided to send a delegation to Esau to announce his arrival to Esau.
• The messengers came back yet with another scare for Jacob, They said: Esau is marching toward you with 400 men.
• Is he coming in peace? Is he coming for war?
• There is no possibility for another runaway, Jacob had to face Esau this time and for all.
• Jacob must be in his best behavior.

Genese 33:1-3

1 ¶ Jacob leva les yeux, et regarda; et voici, Ésaü arrivait, avec quatre cents hommes. Il répartit les enfants entre Léa, Rachel, et les deux servantes.

 2 Il plaça en tête les servantes avec leurs enfants, puis Léa avec ses enfants, et enfin Rachel avec Joseph.

 3 Lui-même passa devant eux; et il se prosterna en terre sept fois, jusqu’à ce qu’il fût près de son frère.

Ge 33:4 Ésaü courut à sa rencontre; il l’embrassa, se jeta à son cou, et le baisa. Et ils pleurèrent.

 5 ¶ Ésaü, levant les yeux, vit les femmes et les enfants, et il dit: Qui sont ceux que tu as là? Et Jacob répondit: Ce sont les enfants que Dieu a accordés à ton serviteur.

 6 Les servantes s’approchèrent, elles et leurs enfants, et se prosternèrent;

 7 Léa et ses enfants s’approchèrent aussi, et se prosternèrent; ensuite Joseph et Rachel s’approchèrent, et se prosternèrent.

 8 Ésaü dit: A quoi destines-tu tout ce camp que j’ai rencontré? Et Jacob répondit: A trouver grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur.

 9 Ésaü dit: Je suis dans l’abondance, mon frère; garde ce qui est à toi.

 10 Et Jacob répondit: Non, je te prie, si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, accepte de ma main mon présent; car c’est pour cela que j’ai regardé ta face comme on regarde la face de Dieu, et tu m’as accueilli favorablement.

 11 Accepte donc mon présent qui t’a été offert, puisque Dieu m’a comblé de grâces, et que je ne manque de rien. Il insista auprès de lui, et Ésaü accepta.

THE PROVIDENTIAL HANDS OF GOD IN THE MEETING OF ESAU

• At the peak of the moment, God intervened again
• Esau is now a changed man
• Esau missed his little brother, he has a heart after all.
• The old grudges are gone
• Esau is now a rich man
• Esau is emotional about seeing Jacob
• For the first time Esau did not come to tease Jacob
• It was a real welcome! God did it; it could well have been the other way.
• Wow the second scare is off; the God of Jacob took care of both Laban and Esau.

JACOB CONTINUE TO OPERATE IN A SAFE MODE

Genese 33:12-17

12 Ésaü dit: Partons, mettons-nous en route; j’irai devant toi.

 13 Jacob lui répondit: Mon seigneur sait que les enfants sont délicats, et que j’ai des brebis et des vaches qui allaitent; si l’on forçait leur marche un seul jour, tout le troupeau périrait.

 14 Que mon seigneur prenne les devants sur son serviteur; et moi, je suivrai lentement, au pas du troupeau qui me précédera, et au pas des enfants, jusqu’à ce que j’arrive chez mon seigneur, à Séir.

 15 Ésaü dit: Je veux au moins laisser avec toi une partie de mes gens. Et Jacob répondit: Pourquoi cela? Que je trouve seulement grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur!

 16 ¶ Le même jour, Ésaü reprit le chemin de Séir.

 17 Jacob partit pour Succoth. Il bâtit une maison pour lui, et il fit des cabanes pour ses troupeaux. C’est pourquoi l’on a appelé ce lieu du nom de Succoth.

 18 A son retour de Paddan-Aram, Jacob arriva heureusement à la ville de Sichem, dans le pays de Canaan, et il campa devant la ville.

• Jacob knew that there was a lot of emotion involved.
• Jacob knew that normalcy would be around the corner
• Jacob insisted that Esau accepted the gifts
  • Genèse 32 :13b-15
  • 13b Jacob prit de ce qu’il avait sous la main, pour faire un présent à Ésaü, son frère:
  •  14 deux cents chèvres et vingt boucs, deux cents brebis et vingt béliers,
  •  15 trente femelles de chameaux avec leurs petits qu’elles allaitaient, quarante vaches et dix taureaux, vingt ânesses et dix ânes.

• Jacob insisted Esau to go ahead
• Jacob insisted that he would not need the help that Esau provided.
• You cannot be too careful in certain fragile relationships, even if God is with you.
• Esau went one way and Jacob went another
• Jacob was close enough to his brother, but not too close to be a burden
• Jacob had some more growing to do
• Jacob had some more enriching to do
• Jacob had some more servants to acquire
• Jacob had some more lands to purchase
• And then Jacob broke the tie with his brother
• And then Jacob entered into his full blessing
• And then Jacob became richer than his brother
• And then Jacob became stronger than his brother
• And then Jacob no longer had to flee for his brother
• And then it became evident to Esau to move away from Jacob

Genèse 36:6-8

6 Ésaü prit ses femmes, ses fils et ses filles, toutes les personnes de sa maison, ses troupeaux, tout son bétail, et tout le bien qu’il avait acquis au pays de Canaan, et il s’en alla dans un autre pays, loin de Jacob, son frère.

 7 Car leurs richesses étaient trop considérables pour qu’ils demeurassent ensemble, et la contrée où ils séjournaient ne pouvait plus leur suffire à cause de leurs troupeaux.

 8 Ésaü s’établit dans la montagne de Séir. Ésaü, c’est Édom.

• And then what God said in the beginning became reality
• And then the children of Jacob began to expand some more
• Some years later all the children of Jacob would be lifted out the land because one of them became the prime minister of Egypt, the greatest country in the world.
• Blessed is he who serves the GOD of Jacob.

The secrets of the successes of Jacob

• Jacob learnt how to survive
• Jacob learnt how to adjust
• At home he was not a hard working man, abroad he became a hard laborer
•  At home Jacob was not a man of the field, abroad, he learnt to survive the harshness of nature
• At home, he was a prince, abroad, he became a servant.
• Jacob knew how to use the proper protocol before those who were mightier than him.
• He knew the right way to humble himself before Esau
• Jacob used all the protocols of submission and peace seeking
• Jacob waved the white flag as soon that he saw Esau
• Jacob used flattery
• Jacob used prudence and wisdom
  • Jacob sent gifts for Esau
  • Jacob subdivided into many camps
  • Jacob prepared a plan of escape
  • Jacob kneeled before Esau
  • Jacob made his family kneel before Esau

THE PEACE BETWEEN THE BROTHERS LASTED FOR THE REST OF THEIR

The peace between Jacob and Esau lasted throughout their lives

• They buried their mother and father together

AMEN!
