I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Ga 5:16
INTRODUCTION
This bold statement came from a man who knows what it is to be controlled by the flesh.
- In his post conversion experience, Paul avowed that he was not always in top in his battle with the flesh.
- Paul exposed the raging battle that went on in the inside of him each time he wanted to be pleasing to God.
- Paul had found the secret on how to live the victorious Spirit filled life as a believer.
- Today, by the grace of God, we will be expounding on what it is to walk by the Spirit of God.
- To know, to assimilate and to assert the Word of God is passive.
- To walk by the Spirit implies action; it proposes and recommends that all the endeavors in the lives of the Christian to be under the scrutiny of the Holy Spirit.
- What many confess to be an authentic relationship with God is simply head knowledge of God.
- A great confusion is resulted in observing the lifestyles of many professed Christians nowadays.
- They quickly argue that it’s between them and God. “God knows my heart.” “Who are you to judge me?”
- Most damagingly, they want to occupy front row in the service of God instead of dealing with their sins.
- In Romans 14 Paul opened up on the struggles he had to face before finally being liberated from the dominion of the flesh.
Romains 7:14-24
22 Car je prends plaisir à la loi de Dieu, selon l’homme intérieur;
Ro 7:14 ¶ For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.
16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good.
17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.
19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.
20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good.
22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
- The flesh is very cunning; its desires always seem pleasant and beneficial.
- The flesh is in a race to occupy the thrown of your being.
- Its influences are always in aim to self gratification.
- I want to be the richest man alive.
- I want to be the most attractive person in the universe.
- I want to be number one in all my endeavors in life.
- I deserve and demand respect, obedience, reverence, love, admiration, dominance and compliance from all.
- My way or the highway
- Me, myself and I
- My interest comes first.
- Nothing is too costly if its end is to get me higher.
- The first trap that gets us in this miserable state was that man wanted to be equal to God.
- Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in hope to elevate themselves to the statue of God.
- If the fruit can open my eyes to be like God, then it is reasonable and attractive, and beneficial that I should eat it.
- The flesh is very sensitive to power, dominance, control, gratification, pleasure, abundance, glory, respect, supremacy, fulfillment, fame, and prominence.
- In order to achieve these ends, all actions are justified.
- In the wild we see some dominant males get all the females.
- He would rage war to any male who aspire his position.
- We are more civilized, but deep down in the inside of us, these fantasies are very alive although we would never admit them.
Ga 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
- The life of the Christian runs in collision with the natural tendencies of his former self.
- In his heart, he wants to serve God, but in his flesh he still wants to be wild.
- He still wants the universe to revolve around him.
- People who used to occupy high position in society in their country of origin find it hard to adapt to another country even if the new country offers more peace and prosperity if they must let go of their former status.
- It sometimes leads to mental disorder for one to forgo their position of power.
- Because the flesh always seems to seek the best interest of the being, its advices are often validated.
- Even the most reasonable person finds it hard to dismiss the advertisements of the flesh.
- Paul discovered that the only remedy to outsmart the flesh is to validate the leadings of the Holy Spirit.
- Allow the Spirit of God to have supremacy over you.
- Starve the flesh;
- dismiss its advices at contact;
- rebuke it with a verse;
- confess your bent to a strong Christian;
- expose its schemes loudly;
- dwell in the Word of God
- Ask God for help
- Resist, resist, resist the devil until it flees from you.
THE CONTRAST BETWEEN THE DESIRES OF THE FLESH VERSUS THE SPIRIT
Galatians 5:19-25
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,
20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,
21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Galates 5:19-25
22 Men, Lespri Bondye a bay renmen, kè kontan, kè poze, pasyans, bon kè, seriozite, li fè ou gen bon manyè.
-
The flesh is always mocking the advices of the Spirit because they do not yield any immediate satisfaction to the soul.
pasyans, egal Gaspiye tan
The aim of the flesh is to drag you in the pit of hell.
-
When Satan came in the Garden of Eden, his aim was to make man fall.
-
His aim was to seize dominion over mankind
-
His aim was lure man out of relationship with God
-
His aim was to cause mankind to inherit the same condemnation as him.
-
He promised man elevation, but we got damnation, punishment, hell, alienation from God.
-
He promised man illumination, but we enter into darkness and spiritual blindness
-
He promised man equality with God, but we were lowered beneath the animals
-
He promised man freedom, but we enter into bondage of sin and death, and he became our master.
The aims of the Holy Spirit are
-
Regeneration
-
Restoration
-
Holiness
-
Reconciliation with God
-
Glorious future
-
Peace
-
Joy
-
Contentment
-
Eternal life with God
The flesh guaranties immediate gratification at all cost
The Spirit of God lines you up for future and everlasting joy and peace even if suffering and lacks may be experienced in the present.
CONCLUSION
Ga 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
-
Do not try to outsmart the flesh by your own reasoning, because Satan can appear as an angel of God.
-
Always seek the voice of God in all your endeavors
-
Be always attentive and obedient to the leadings of the Holy Spirit.
-
Seek to glorify God in everything you do or say.

Ask others around you to help you identify your blind spots.
-
Don’t trust your feelings but examine them in the light of the Word of God.
Romains 6:12
AMEN !
