(LSV)

LECTURE JOSUÉ 22: 10-20

THE FEAR OVER THE NEXT GENERATION

INTRODUCTION

  • Whether we like it or not, every generation has to pass the baton to the upcoming generation.

  • Some families that have had a long history of businesses, grow in fear when the present leaders are about to fade out.

  • Some great leaders die in fear and agony that his or her successors will drop the baton and lose everything they had worked so hard to achieve.

  • Moses had that fear that after his death that the children of Israel will turn back to idols worship.

  • Joshua had that certainty that the Israelites will break their alliance with God.

  • David had that fear that the young Salomon would not be able to achieve the building of the temple that he began to gather a great quantity of materials for the construction of the temple.

  • The generation after Salomon suffered the great fall; his successor Roboam dropped the baton so bad that the effect is still felt to this day.

    • The people of the land approached him at the beginning of his reign to ask him to go easy on them and to alleviate the tax burden his father Salomon had put them under.
    • The young king consulted the elders of the land who advised him to go easy on the people and to promise them a break.
    • He then turn back and consulted the young people of his generation who advised him to impose fear on the people and to harass them of harsher punishments than his father if they put him to the test.
    • That caused the division of the nation of Israel. Ten tribes broke loose and chose their own leader to form the Northern kingdom. Only two tribes remained with Roboam Judah and Benjamin.
  • Although God was behind it, but it unfolded in the natural course of human interactions.

THE ALTAR IN THE EAST

  • Here in Joshua 22 we see such a great fear of the next generation that prompted 3 tribes to build a monument that nearly caused the first civil war among the Jews.

  • The Tribe of Reuben, the Tribe of Gad, and the half Tribe of Manasseh have decided to erect a monument in the form of an altar in defense of upcoming generations.
  • The building of any place of worship was forbidden by them in order to keep them united.
  • The Lord was the one who was supposed to indicate where the place of worship would be. The entire nation would have to sojourn to that appointed place for all the convocations unto the Lord.
  • Because the Midianites had caused them such a great defeat by polluting them with their women and to entice them to worship false gods. God ordered them to eradicate Midian and his five kings.
  • Although the intended Promised Land was to begin on the other side of the Jordan, with this acquired Land, Moses allowed the Tribes of Reuben and Gad to reside there with two conditions:
    • First: that they would continue to fight alongside with their brethren to conquer all the land that God had promised them before returning to settle down.

    • Second: that they would continue to come down to worship at the appointed place in all the major Jewish Holidays. (Convocations)

  • In Joshua 22, after all the lands were conquered, Joshua ordered that the men from Rubeun and Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh to return home.

  • Upon returning, these men felt isolated with the rest of Israel because the Jordan seemed as a frontier between two nations just like it used to be before.

  • These three tribes have then decided to protect themselves against the next generation that may soon forget their roots.

  • They built themselves a magnificent altar.

THE REACTION OF THE 10 TRIBES OF ISRAEL OVER THE ALTAR IN THE EAST

  • The rest of Israel reacted for several reasons.

  1. Fearing that the altar would infuriate God

  2. Fearing that it symbolized a declaration of independence from the rest of them.

  3. Fearing that they would worship a different god. Or, two different nations serving the same God which would have been unacceptable at that time.

  4. Fearing the wrath of God over the entire nation based on past experiences like.

    1. The affair of Acham

    2. The affair of baal Peor under the inspiration of Balak and Balaam.

    3. The 40 years in the desert

    4. The golden calf of Aaron

    5. The sons of Phineas who opposed Moses.

    6. The birds in the desert that made them sick.

    7. Fearing the plagues of the venomous snakes in the desert and others.

  • The rest of Israel was really concerned about the wrath of God, that they would rather eradicate the three tribes that were causing the problem then having to face a short life in the newly acquired and long awaited for Promised Land.

THE THREE TRIBES DEFENDED THEIR ACTIONS

THE RESOLUTION

  • The whole thing was about the fear of the next generation.

  • The fear was validated by all the parties.

  • The possibility of the future downfall was very real that the action was found to be appropriated.

  • Looking at this emerging generation which claims to partake the same Christian heritage as us, I grow worry in the same fashion that these three Tribes had gone worry.

  • They had found a solution to counteract the shipwreck.

  • I only have a feeble ways to convey my concerns, and perhaps this message will stir the courage of some silent mourners to express their concerns openly.

THE PRESENT CONCERNS FOR THIS GENERATION

  • In the areas of technology, efficiency, science, and speed, we have zero concern for all upcoming generations have already proven to be able to push the boundaries way pass what their predecessors though possible.

  • In the areas of nationalism, morality, spirituality and doctrines, we can almost count on the next generation to drop the baton.

  • I have great concern for the next generation that is following just like the 3 tribes had that caused them to build an altar in the East of Jordan.

  • Thanks to YouTube and the other social media, we are raising a generation worshipers of God that pose a great threat to Christianity at large.

  • We are raising a generation of Christians that are gearing the attentions to themselves instead of Christ.

  • We now have a bunch a super stars singing Christians songs but when you look at the style of clothe they wear.

    • And how they conduct themselves,

    • Some with tattoos all over them;

    • Some with as many earrings that their ears can hold,

    • Some with wiped pants,

    • Some that look more like a bunch of rebels rather than looking like Christians.

    • Some of the dances and choreographies they do.

    • Even the style of the music is sometimes questioned.

    • The weaknesses in doctrine in some of the lyrics, and the little clichés that they repeat over and over to excite people to ecstasy.

    • We need to ask ourselves, what is this world turning into?

    • What will Christianity look like 20 years down the line?

  • We now have a bunch of super stars who call themselves prophets or pastors or evangelists who are none other than wolves with sheep clothing.

    • They are the ones getting the attentions of the main stream media in this miracle craved society that we live in.

    • Some of them are ripping the pockets of the people to profit their agendas.

    • Some have introduced pagan practices in the churches in broad daylight.

    • Some are busy talking about prosperity as of something that will fall from the sky from God’s thrown, yet they themselves only rely on their listeners to send them money.

      • If you can get blessed for giving $1000 to God, then do it at your local church that may be in greater need of it.

      • Give it to someone in need near you.

    • If a media ministry has been a blessing to you, then support that ministry as well don’t force them to manipulate you in order to get a donation from you.

    • Don’t be manipulated one way or another.

OUTLOOK APPEARANCE MATTERS

  • The outlook appearance is the first public message that someone is going to give for Christ. What you look like in the outside can blur people from seeing what you look like in the inside.

  • Criminals have always been advised by their lawyers to dress up like a church folks so that the jury would not be able to associate them with whatever heinous crimes they may have committed or accused of.

  • When you appear so worldly while ministering for God, what message are you conveying to the world except that:

    • There is no difference between God and Satan

    • We envy you; you have styles and we don’t, etc.

  • God cared so much about outlook appearances that he ordered to the minutest detail what the Levites were to wear.

  • The late Dr Gray Allison the founder of Mid America Baptist Theological Seminary once said this when I was taking a preaching class with him. “Listen guys, when you dress up so casually as the world in the pulpit, don’t be surprised when the reverence the parishioners had for you drop to that they would have for a pagan.”

  • There was a television preacher who used to dress up so tightly to show his muscles, his six pack, it was later discovered that he was a bisexual. He might have died of HIV according to speculations.

  • Another television preacher who spent much of his time trying to look good than preparing to minister to the people is now an out of closet homosexual.

  • The next generation is approaching very fast and very soon, they will be the ones calling the shots.

  • What they do will represent Christendom to the rest of the world. I don’t care what denomination you belong to, my question to you is: do you feel safe about the future in the rhythm that things are going now?

  • We now have the problem of relativity as well. The “It’s between me and my God syndrome” is one of the biggest chokers for the next generation of Christians.

  • Will Christ find faith in this world at his return?

CONCLUSION

  • Leaders should not trust the system to feed them their successors; they should be proactive in preparing their successors.

  • The natural tendency is to be replaced by one’s own offspring, but reality has proven that it’s not always the best choice.

  • If not your son or daughter, then look if there’s no Joshua hanging around you.

  • Seek to see if there is no shepherd named David in the field near you.

  • The manual did not say to go out and make church members or create mega churches, but it says to go and make disciples.

    • Attract the next generation to you.

    • Adopt a few candidates to pass on the baton to

    • Make a few good disciples don’t worry about numbers but focus on quality.

    • Clone yourself in them.

    • Have them to live in your house if you can.

    • Allow them to watch you in all your endeavors.

    • Inculcate faith, principles, morality, doctrines, loyalty, and fear of God in them.

    • Allow them to see how to treat their spouses.

    • Let them observe your life of prayer.

    • Allow them to see your scars.

    • Become a launching pad to orient them in the directions God has placed for them.

    • Delegate them as much as possible and supervise them.

    • Do all that you can, and die in peace with no fear hanging over your tomb as to what the future of Christianity will look like.

AMEN!
